Explore Cuba!
SOCA490, ETHN499, ANTH490, HIST390, INST390, POLS390
Discover the unique identity of Santiago de Cuba and Las Tunas through their history, politics, culture, religions, sculpture, art and tourism. This incredible opportunity will enable you to confront and go beyond the clichés and ideas you have received about the charming, warm and proud Caribbean island of Cuba.
Participants are based in Santiago, Cuba's historic second-largest city that saw the beginning of the revolution in 1959 and hosts the gorgeous cemetery of Ifigenia where illustrious Cubans (including Fidel Castro) are laid to rest. It is also the city with the largest percentage of Afro-Cubans. The group will visit La Tunas, an art-oriented mid-size city of 211,428 people and historic Puerta Padre where you can enjoy a fine beach in January’s mild tropical temperatures.
This study tour will be led by Dr. Simon Akindes, Professor in the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Law at UW-Parkside. Dr. Akindes is an experienced traveler and has previous travel experience in Cuba. He will be working with Common Ground Education & Travel Company which has more than 20 years experience in Cuba.
